The 1989 Le Mans 24 Hours was the 57th motor racing marathon held at the Circuit de la Sarthe in Le Mans, France, on 10 and 11 June 1989.
 
In the race, the Sauber cars maintained a wait-and-see strategy, staying covered and around the top positions, while Jaguar, Porsche and Nissan forced the pace to build up margins. The number 3 Jaguar of Davy Jones takes the lead and remains there almost steadily pursued by the number 9 Porsche of Bob Wollek and the Sauber, but after five hours engine problems occur that force it to retire. So it was Porsche number 9 that took the lead for over four hours, until it was slowed down by mechanical problems and overtaken by Jan Lammers' Jaguar number 1.
 
But on Sunday morning the Jaguar also had to slow down due to gearbox problems, which caused it to slip down the rankings. Two Sauber cars were firmly in the lead, the car driven by Mauro Baldi remained in the lead for 15 laps, then the Italian driver made a mistake at the Dunlop Curve and was overtaken by the other Sauber C9.
 
The race ended with the two Sauber cars in 1st and 2nd place, the car driven by Jochen Mass, Manuel Reuter and Stanley Dickens won, with a 5 lap margin over their team mates; in 3rd place was the Porsche 962C of Joest Racing, in 4th place the Jaguar XJR-9 and in 5th the other Sauber C9.
